Al Baker

Al Baker fue un ilusionista americano. Nació el 4 de abril de 1874 en Poughkeepsie, Nueva York. Conoció la magia cuando tenía 12 años de edad, cuando su padre le mostró un juego en el que desaparecía un puñado de arroz contenido en un plato mientras lo tapaba con un sombrero. Empezó entonces a aprender magia de libros como La magia del Profesor Hoffmann.

Cuando tenía 17 años asistió al espectáculo de Herrman The Great que en ese momento se encontraba en su ciudad. Luego de ver el acto, decidió que la magia sería su oficio. Durante varios años trabajó en un show ambulante que vendía medicinas, divirtiendo a sus compradores con sus habilidades. Cuando tenía 23 años, empezó a trabajar con un ventrilocuo.[1] Una noche, el ventrilocuo estaba borracho, y no pudo presentar su acto; Baker lo sustituyó a pesar de no conocer ese arte, obteniendo un buen resultado. Preparó entonces un número propio, y se dedicó a viajar por todo el país con un número cómico que fue aclamado por los magos de su tiempo.

Conseguía darle a cada presentación un toque personal, que hacía que quienes lo veían sentían que el espectáculo había sido preparado específicamente para ellos. Su amabilidad y forma de actuar hacía que personas de todas las edades se divirtieran con su número. Tenía una temporización perfecta en sus presentaciones, aplicando distracciones en los momentos justos, consiguiendo, además de una excelente atmósfera de diversión, que sus efectos mágicos fueran perfectos.

Al Baker Escribió 5 libros a lo largo de su carrera: Al Baker's Book One (1933), Al Baker's Book Two (1935), Magical Ways & Means (1941), Mental Magic (1949), y Pet Secreto (1951). Escribió también una cartilla, Cardially Yours, en 1933.

Tenía doce años cuando se le despertó el interés por la magia a partir de un juego que le enseñó su padre, y empezó a leer libros como “La Magia del Profesor Foffman” con la intención de aprender y dedicarse a la profesión. Su primera experiencia tuvo lugar ayudando a un feriante que vendía pócimas medicinales. Tres años después se incorpora a un espectáculo ambulante ayudando a un ventrílocuo. Una noche en que el ventrílocuo estaba demasiado borracho para trabajar, Al Baker le sustituye y logra un éxito rotundo. A partir de aquí recorrió todo el país presentando su propio espectáculo de magia y ventriloquía en vaudevilles. En 1911 dejó el vaudeville por clubes privados desarrollando un estilo propio de magia de salón. Su espectáculo incluía ventriloquia, magia, mentalismo y humor. En 1930 se asocia con el mentalista Martin Sunshine y ambos abren la tienda “Broadway Magic Shop” en Nueva York. En 1932 funda con otros cuatro socios el “New York Inner Circle”. Su carácter amable hacía que niños y adultos disfrutaran de sus números por igual. El público percibía en él a un caballero con un gran sentido del humor. Durante muchos años fue considerado como uno de los mejores humoristas en la magia.

Al Baker fue uno de los primeros inventores de efectos mágicos que eran rápidamente utilizados por otros magos y que han seguido utilizándose durante décadas.

Consiguió crear un encanto especial y unas maneras que hacían que tanto adultos como niños sintieran que las actuaciones eran realizadas especialmente para ellos. Y éste era el gran éxito de Al Baker. Su carácter y sus maneras amables hacían que niños y adultos disfrutaran de sus números. Las personas encontraban en él un caballero con un gran sentido del humor.

Al Baker tenía un timing perfecto en sus representaciones, cada pase era aplicado en su momento justo, sabía cuando tenía que hacer la trampa, cuando desviar la atención, durante muchos años fue considerado como uno de los mejores humoristas en la magia.

Al fue uno de los primeros inventores de efectos mágicos, cada invención tenía su toque especial, usándose rápidamente por otros magos estas invenciones que llevaban su sello personal, estos efectos que inventó se llevaron usando desde los años 30, 40 y 50 e incluso aún hoy en día se pueden ver.

En la Enciclopedia de la Magia de T.A Waters, se puede leer sobre Al Baker: "Mago legendario destacado a la vez por sus invenciones, métodos sutiles y por sus presentaciones escénicas."


Breve Biografía

Al Baker nació el 4 de septiembre de 1874 en Poughkeepsie Estado de Nueva York.
Comenzó la magia a los 12 años después de que su padre le mostró un juego donde hacía desaparecer el arroz contenido en un cuenco colocado bajo un sombrero. Aprendió a continuación a partir de libros como "La magia del Profesor Hoffmann".
A los 17 años, presencia el espectáculo de Herrman The Great que estaba en gira en su ciudad. Decidió esa noche que la magia se volvería su oficio.
A los 20 años, Al era a la vez mago, vendedor y colaborador en un show de un feriante ambulante que vendía pociones medicinales. Después de haber elogiado los beneficios del producto, divierte al público, luego les vende el producto. Es durante estos 3 años que aprendió a hablar ante todos los tipos de clases de gente.

A los 23 años, se incorpora a un show ambulante. Trabajaba con un ventriloquo que estaba constantemente borracho. Una noche de esas en que no pudo levantarse, Al Baker tuvo que sustituirlo, haciendo el numero sin conocer nada de técnica de ventriloquia. Bajó pues la cabeza cada vez que la marioneta debía hablar. Controló finalmente el número completo y surcó todo el país con un número comico cuya perfección e ingeniosidad aclamarón todos los magos de su tiempo. Presentaba espectáculos de Vodevil, 4 al día cobrando u$s 1,25.
De 1911 a 1920, trabajó a continuación en distintos clubes donde desarrolló su estilo: una magia íntima y próxima a la gente (tipo magia de salón).
Durante su carrera, transito con muy buen éxito por todas las ramas de la magia, close-up, salón, cartomagia, escena, ventriloquia, mentalismo, magia para niños, magia cómica y también presentador. Desarrolló mucho la magia de los hilos.
En 1930, se volvió el asociado de Martin Sunshine, (mentaliste muy conocido del tiempo) para tener el almacén de magia "Braodway Magic Shop" en Nueva York.
Fue uno también de los 5 miembros fundadores de Nueva York Inner Circle en 1932.
En 1938, se le elige como una de las 10 estrellas del cartomagie.
En 1940, se convierte en el suegro de Jay Marshall.
Muere el 31 de octubre de 1951 a la edad de 77 años.

Invenciones

Al Baker inventó numerosos moves y métodos, como:
- Think stop trick [ 1919 ];
- Purse frame [ 1920 ];
- The umbrella move [ 1949 ];
- A card and a number.

Desarrolló e inventó numerosas cosas con el hilo invisible (en la época, se trataba a menudo de cabello humano):

- El juego atormentado;
- Distintos cayados a las cartas (utilizables en close-up, salón o escena);
- El billete animado;
- The walking and jumping card;
- El fular que se desenreda completamente solo;
o también, distintos sistemas de estiba del hilo muy sutiles.

Comercializó también numerosos efectos mágicos como "The dictionnary test" o también su versión de los cuencos de arroz cuya excelente descripción se contiene en el libro de Bruce Elliot "Classic secrets of magic" (una descripción se encuentra también en el volumen Tours "la prestidigitación del Siglo XX ".)
Al Baker inspiró a numerosos magos incluidos contemporáneos como Gaétan Floración o Socrate.

Algunos consejos del maestro

Comience por ser usted. No intente ser otro. Si conoce 1000 moves no lo hace mago; por el contrario, es hacer algunos moves de manera divertida porque sí. Los argumentos contenidos en los libros pueden convenir al autor pero no a usted.
No escriba demasiados largos argumentos para una rutina ya que al final, el público habrá olvidado el principio.
Saber a qué momento dejar es una cosa importante.
Cuando logra desaparecer un objeto grande, dejelo desaparecido. Vi a un mago hacer muy bien desaparecer una jaula de pájaros. Luego, fue hacia otro lado y salió lo que se suponían ser la misma jaula. El público era sorprendido por la desaparición pero cuando reproduce la jaula, todos pensaron: "¡Ah, pues allí esta!" Es mejor si el público se pregunta después del espectáculo: "dónde pasó esta jaula?"

Reflexiones y consejos sobre el mentalismo

Al Baker estaba absolutamente contra los charlatanes y toda utilización del mentalismo para abusar de la credulidad y el desamparo de algunas personas. Lo practicaba solamente con fines de entretenimiento.
La presentación de un efecto de lectura de pensamientos difiere mucho de la magia:
Solo es necesario utilizar objetos ordinarios que se podría encontrar en una casa o sobre un espectador: sobres, papel, bloque, lápices, libros, revistas o billetes. Todos los aparatos tan costosos como cajas, bolsa de intercambio o tubo cromado deben proscribirse. Todo efecto que pide un equipo especial no puede presentarse como un efecto de mentalismo. Esta norma no se aplica hasta a los objetos visibles y no a los gimmicks (uñil, fp)
Toda demostración de destreza debe evitarse ya que les asimilará a un tramposo. Cada acción del mentalista debe ser exactamente la misma que la que haría cualquier persona que dirige los mismos objetos.
Se encuentran en los libros docenas de maneras de intercambiar billetes de papel donde el espectador escribió información. Adoptan un método para hacer un cambio y hagalo hasta que se convierta en su naturaleza.
Los efectos de mentalismo dependen mucho del texto que debe parecer ser improvisado aunque que se estudia atentamente antes. El mentalista debe ser capaz de realizar algunos movimientos secretos observando al mismo tiempo al espectador y hablándole de la manera más inocente posible. La facultad de leer una palabra o un corto mensaje de un rápido vistazo es muy precioso en mentalismo.
Puede ser adquirida por la impulsión.
Otra astucia que debe desarrollarse es la capacidad de explotar como máximo la menor información. Un juicioso move puede permitir obtener asombrosos resultados.
Los gestos son importantes. Pueden a la ocasión leer al parecer un mensaje de un papel tenido en mano mientras que realmente están leyendo uno colocado sobre su mesa. Para cubrir eso, colocan su otra mano sobre su frente con el fin de ocultar la dirección de su mirada. Sin embargo habrán utilizado el mismo gesto varias veces antes, con el fin de acostumbrar al público que no los observará entonces ya. Se deriva que si encuentran que un determinado gesto es necesario para cubrir un movimiento secreto, hechas en una práctica de utilizar este gesto de manera natural e inocente durante su espectáculo.
Controlar un buen sistema mnemotécnico.
